Because of the recent resurgence of bed bugs, manufacturers everywhere are producing products that claim to be effective in the prevention or eradication of bed bugs.  It’s easy to get carried away and purchase unnecessary items—especially if you are currently suffering from bed bugs.

     To Buy:

• “Climb-up Interceptors.”  These round discs are placed under each leg of your bed, which means any bugs coming or going would have to crawl across this and get caught—great if you suspect you may have bed bugs.
• Protect-a-Bed mattress and boxspring cover.  These covers will protect your mattress should bed bugs ever come into your home and will save $$ later. If you already have bed bugs, this will stop the problem from growing and spreading to other areas.
• Pack-Tite.  The Pack-Tite is a collapsible box that looks like a suitcase.  It has a zipper around the top, and fits most luggage inside.  This is a wise investment for a frequent traveler.  When you return from a trip—or a busy day out—put your belongings in the Pack Tite and turn on the power.  This heats your contents to 140 degrees, and kills any bed bugs or eggs that may be lurking in your suitcase.

What not to buy:

• “Sleep Sacks.”  Many people bring along these sacks to sleep in in beds at hotels.  These are ineffective, as bed bugs crawl inside—and then it is another way to transport the bugs home with you.
• Do-It-Yourself pesticides.  Bed Bugs can rarely be fought without the help of a professional.  Bed bugs are typically resistant to most pesticides and this only spreads the bugs instead of killing them.
